A directory beats a banner in a small trade
In a market of a few thousand companies, buying decisions are not made in the moment someone sees a banner. They are made when a forwarder needs a surveyor by Thursday and opens the directory. That is why the directory outperforms display here by a wide margin, and why it is sold by the year: the enquiry that justifies the entry may arrive nine months after it was placed. Advertisers used to consumer campaigns find this counterintuitive until the first call comes in from a category page.
Technical readers punish brochures
A contributed article that explains how a system actually works — with the limitations stated — gets read to the end by people who buy these systems. The same article rewritten as marketing gets abandoned in the first paragraph, and the company's name is now attached to the abandonment. We edit contributed pieces hard for this reason, and we send back the ones that cannot be saved. It is a difficult conversation once and a better result for everyone afterwards.
